These quarters honor a broad and diverse group of prominent American women who made significant contributions in a variety of fields, including suffrage, civil rights, abolition, government, humanities, science, space, and the arts. The women honored are from ethnically, racially, and geographically diverse backgrounds. The five women honored in 2022 include:

MAYA ANGELOU. Writer, poet, performer, social activist, and teacher, Angelou (1928–2014) rose to international prominence as an author after the publication of her groundbreaking autobiography, I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings.

SALLY RIDE. Sally Kristen Ride (1951–2012) was an American astronaut and physicist. She joined NASA in 1978 and became the first American woman in space when she flew a mission on the space shuttle Challenger on June 18, 1983.

WILMA MANKILLER. Wilma Pearl Mankiller (1945–2010) was an American Cherokee activist, social worker, community developer and the first woman elected to serve as Principal Chief of the Cherokee Nation.

NINA OTERO-WARREN. María Adelina Isabel Emilia “Nina” Otero-Warren (1881–1965) was a woman’s suffragist, educator, and politician. She was first Hispanic woman to run for U.S. Congress and the first female superintendent of public schools in Santa Fe, New Mexico.

ANNA MAY WONG. Wong Liu-tsong (1905–1961), known professionally as Anna May Wong, was an American actress and was Hollywood’s first Chinese-American movie star, and the first Chinese-American actress to gain international recognition.
