Title:

Counterstamp Dime

Description:
Undated Silver Disk or Worn Bust Dime. X In Cross-Hatched Circle / J. C. TILTON., Smooth Host; XF Counterstamps. Brunk T-300, Rulau Ma-Hv 18. Finely made prepared punches. Four examples known. This counterstamp has never been adequately explained. One theory recommends Jeremiah C. Tilton of Sanbornton Bridge, New Hampshire as a possible issuer. He was granted at least three patents for weaving, loom, and flocking equipment. The X symbol on a lined field may relate to weaving or loom-related equipment. The Tiltons sold their business at the start of the Civil War. J.C. Tilton returned to be one of the founding fathers of Tilton, New Hampshire. Ex: Van Ormer Collection (Bowers and Merena, 9/1985), lot 2887.
