Obverse and Reverse: Depicts the Archangel Michael as he slays Satan during the battle between Heaven and Hell. With his war armor on and a shield in his left hand, Michael raises a spear that is topped by a Christian cross as he prepares to drive the spear down through the back of Satan. While some depictions throughout history have shown Satan as a dragon or other serpent, this one takes on the familiar demon figure with horns and wings. Michael’s powerful wings extend throughout the background as the shield’s field is filled by clouds with a symbolic sun at the very top of the shield representing the light of heaven.
