Title:
Greek Mythology Scylla
Description:
Obverse: Features the sea monster known as Scylla. This truly terrifying creature is depicted as a woman with tentacle-like hair and several long feet with monstrous heads at the ends. Scylla is shown looking down at the crashing waves as a ship attempts to pass by. Inscribed along the lower rim is the word Scylla.
Reverse: Contains a Greek dome design. Inscribed along the ornate ceiling are the words Greek Mythology. The ceiling is then supported by Greek pillars and a decorative base. Down at the lower border of the round, you will find inscriptions reading One Troy Ounce, .999 Fine Silver, Intaglio Mint.
Students of Greek mythology are first introduced to Scylla in Homer’s epic poem The Odyssey. During his perilous journey home, Odysseus and his men must sail through the strait guarded on one end by Scylla and Charybdis on the other. Because Charybdis could create a whirlpool and sink the entire ship, Circe advises Odysseus to face Scylla instead. Odysseus ultimately passes through unharmed, but not before six of his men are snatched by the monster.
