Title:
Heroes Of Desert Storm $5 Commemorative Coin
Description:
The Heroes Of Desert Storm:
On January 15, 1991, the United States stood on the precipice of war. Arrogantly defying a United Nations resolution demanding the removal of his army from Kuwait, Iraqi President Saddam Hussein tightened his pitiless grip on Kuwaiti citizens and continued his murderous plunder of their defenseless country. United Nations coalition forces representing thirty-four countries — and including more than half a million American sons and daughters — occupied strategic military positions in Saudi Arabia’s desolate wilderness, awaiting word. A day later, word came: “The liberation of Kuwait has begun.” The United States and allied armed forces of Operation Desert Storm swept down upon their Iraqi adversaries in a righteous fury. Within forty three-days the forces of justice triumphed and Saddam Hussein capitulated — his heinous war machine decimated, his army in rout and his territorial ambitions obliterated. Delivered from bondage, jubilant Kuwaiti citizens tasted freedom for the first time in more than seven months.
The Story Of Operation Desert Storm:
Saddam Hussein — tyrannical president of Iraq — hungered for domination and control of the Middle East. Just after 2 a.m. on August 2, 1990, more than 120,000 Iraqi combat troops surged across the borders into neighboring Kuwait. By mid-afternoon the country had fallen. United States President George Bush mobilized all branches of America’s forces and under Operation Desert Shield dispatched troops to Saudi Arabia. In late November the United Nations passed a resolution directing Hussein to withdraw his forces from Kuwait by January 15, 1991, and authorized the use of force to free Kuwait if Hussein defied the resolution. America’s finest fighting force — joined by their United Nations coalition compatriots — waited as the deadline loomed before them. On January 16th, 1991, Operation Desert Storm swept across Hussein’s army and ground his vainglorious ambitions into dust.
Story Of The Heroes of Desert Storm Coin:
The Heroes of Desert Storm $5 Commemorative Coin was issued by the Republic of the Marshall Islands — whose sons proudly marched through Desert Storm side by side with their valiant American Comrades — on July 4th, 1991, the day President Bush invited Americans to “celebrate the rebirth of patriotism.” Created by internationally acclaimed artist, stamp and coin designer Howard Koslow, the coin reflects the love of liberty and devotion to duty which guided the forces of Operation Desert Storm. The obverse of the coin appropriately proclaims “To the Heroes of Desert Storm” and features the most beloved emblem of power and liberty, the bald eagle. The five arrows clutched in its talons symbolize strength…the olive branch peace. The reverse of the coin bears the coat of arms of the Marshall Islands, an image which appears on all its national coinage. Minted in Solid Cupronickel, the coins is 38.71 mm in diameter, and is legal tender of the Republic of the Marshall Islands.
