Crime & Corruption Commission - Witness Protection Challenge Coin
The Witness Protection Unit (WPU), Crime and Corruption Commission (CCC) is proud to offer the inaugural run of the WPU Challenge Coin.
The WPU formed in 1987 and has been staffed by seconded Police officers under the former CJC through to the now CCC. The Queensland WPU is the only WP unit in Australia that is administered by an independent commission and not a Police Service.
There are two (2) versions of the WPU Challenge Coin. Both versions are 50.8mm in size and have the same front design featuring the CCC logo and incorporating Witness Protection Queensland identifier. The rear features the emblem of the WPU - the Black Phoenix. The mythical bird known as the phoenix was said to have lived for centuries before throwing itself onto a fire, to re-emerge from the ashes reborn. Witnesses are metaphorically throwing themselves on to the fire when coming forward to assist law enforcement and later relocated and re-identified in order to live on anew, thus being reborn. The traditional bright plumage of the phoenix is replaced by black feathers, which signify that a part of protected witnesses always remains covert or carefully hidden in the shadows. The WPU motto “Vigilantia El Tolerentia” emphasising the vigilance coupled with the tolerance required with managing protected witnesses.
Version 1 is available to all CCC and QPS members:
Version 2 is exclusively available to current and former Witness Protection Unit officers only.
This version has the features of the Version 1 coin with the Black Phoenix set on the maroon palette of Queensland with letters “WPO” set below the flames to indicate the served/serving designation as a Witness Protection Officer within the WPU.
Persons wishing to purchase this coin must provide their name/registration number and approx. period of service (i.e., 2010-2014) for verification to CCC records. You must be verified as a previous member of the Witness Protection Unit to purchase this coin, otherwise a Version 1 coin will be supplied.
Version 2 coin depicted below:
Cost: Coin cost - $24.00 per coin. Price is the same for both versions and includes a hard plastic protective capsule. Maximum order of 5 total coins (irrespective of combination) per person and stock is available now.
The total cost includes delivery unfortunately due to our inability to offer free pickups. Orders will be delivered either to Brisbane stations/establishments and some surrounding areas or elsewhere by registered Australia Post. Full postal/delivery details are required to be provided for each order in the event that delivery is not possible. All orders will be packaged in an Australia Post padded mail bag and registered post ID details will be provided to via email to recipients. Where practicable, orders from the same location/establishment may be dispatched in one parcel (with orders individually packed and all recipients advised).
