Der Name der Stadt Nemausus leitet sich von einem keltischen Gott ab, der von den Volcae Arecomici verehrt wurde, die hier ihre Hauptstadt gegründet hatten, die später von Augustus in Colonia Augusta Nemausus (27 v. Chr. umgewandelt wurde. Das Symbol der Stadt war das ägyptische Krokodil, das an eine Palme gekettet war, die auf der Rückseite dieser Münzserie erscheint und auf der Vorderseite die Porträts von Augustus und seinem Leutnant Agrippa zu sehen sind. Die Typen sind eine klare Anspielung auf die Gründung der Stadt durch Legionäre, die von den ägyptischen Feldzügen zurückkehrten, und auf Augustus’ Sieg dank Agrippa über Mark Antony in der Schlacht von Actium (31 v. Chr.).

The name of the city Nemausus derives from a Celtic god worshipped by the Volcae Arecomici, who had established their capital here, later transformed by Augustus into Colonia Augusta Nemausus (27 BC). The symbol of the city was the Egyptian crocodile chained to a palm tree that appears on the reverse of this coin series, which features the portraits of Augustus and his lieutenant Agrippa on the obverse. The types are a clear allusion to the founding of the city by legionaries returning from the Egyptian campaigns and to Augustus’ victory, thanks to Agrippa, over Mark Antony at the Battle of Actium (31 BC).
