Title:

1849 Florin (“Godless”)

Description:
First year of issue (1849-1850), with a young, crowned Queen Victoria. Breaking with tradition, the florin’s inscription omitted the phrase “Dei Gratia” (By the Grace of God), which had adorned British coins for centuries. Instead, it simply read “Victoria Regina 1849”. Gothic style similar to the 1847 crown, but with Roman lettering. The reverse displays the shields of England (twice), Scotland and Ireland, along with the nations’ floral emblems.
