Title:
1861 CSA Half Dollar (1962 Bashlow Restrike Token)
Description:
Silver • Possible Fake.

The Bashlow Restrike 1861 Confederate Half Dollar was created in 1962 using newly made dies that imitated the white metal Scott Restrike Tokens of 1879. One side shows an accurate copy of the die used in 1861 to strike the four Original Confederate Half Dollars at the New Orleans Mint. The Original Confederate Half Dollar was paired with the obverse of an 1861 United States Half Dollar. The 1879 Scott Restrike used the original Confederate designed die with an advertising design and struck only in white metal. The Bashlow restrike, named for Robert Bashlow (who is credited with creating this restrike along with the 2nd restrikes of the Confederate Cents), did not use the original Confederate Half Dollar die to make these restrikes, but one created to appear the same as the one used for the Original Confederate Half Dollar. For a reverse die, Bashlow used a design similar to that of the 1879 white metal restrike.
