Title:
QPS Historical Hat Badges
Description:
The Coin Set That Never Was
In an ambitious effort to honour the proud history of the Queensland Police Service, a commemorative set of five coins was created to showcase the evolution of QPS hat badges over the decades. These coins went through a full design and approval process and were signed off for production — a tribute in the making.
However, shortly after release, several historical inaccuracies were identified. These included incorrect dates, mismatched hat badge designs, and inconsistencies in the use of terminology — notably the confused use of "hat badge” and "cap badge” in the title.
It was sharp-eyed members of the Friends of the Queensland Police Museum, along with other diligent QPS staff, who spotted these errors. As a result, the entire set was pulled from sale and destroyed before it could become widely distributed.
Only a small number of sets escaped destruction, now held by a handful of collectors. Ironically, because of their rarity and backstory, these sets have become highly sought-after collector’s items — a tangible reminder that even well-intentioned projects require a close eye for detail.
What could have been a staple in QPS memorabilia is now a collector’s curiosity — the coin set that never was.
Happy Collecting!
