The Return of the Gryphon: Back to Basics with the 2024 Financial and Cyber Crime Group Coin
In ancient legend, the gryphon was a formidable guardian — part eagle, part lion — a symbol of vigilance and protector of treasure. Fierce, intelligent, and watchful, it was said to guard vast gold hoards from those who sought to steal what was not theirs. For the Queensland Police Service Financial and Cyber Crime Group, the gryphon is more than just mythology — it’s a fitting emblem of their mission: to protect Queenslanders from deception, financial manipulation, and cyber exploitation in all its evolving forms.
The 2024 Financial and Cyber Crime Group challenge coin was designed with that symbolism front and centre. It represents a return to form. After years of novelty coins — swivel centres, oversized diameters, and multi-colour designs — the team made a conscious decision to go back to basics. No gimmicks. No trends. Just a sharp, purposeful design that speaks for itself.
Crafted at the classic 45 mm size, the reverse of the coin features the Golden Gryphon, set against a deep black background to enhance the striking 3D texture and golden finish. A silver border frames the image, with unit text engraved in a clean, professional New Roman font — serious and refined. It’s a coin built with intent, for those who do serious work.
The obverse side showcases the Queensland Police Service Detective Badge — in all its gold, white, and blue authority, accented with a hint of red. It’s a bold yet elegant tribute to the detective’s role in today’s complex fraud and cyber environments — a sharp design for a sharp coin.
But this coin’s journey is as intriguing as the work of the unit itself. Designed and finalised in 2024, the coin was sent to manufacture… and then seemingly vanished. Whispers began to spread — the coins had arrived, but were locked away, their fate unknown. For months, the 2024 coin became a sort of urban legend within the unit. Some had seen one. Most hadn’t. Then, in early 2025, the coins quietly resurfaced — intact, untouched, and ready.
With renewed interest and a growing appetite within the broader QPS challenge coin community, the decision was made: release them. Limited in number and steeped in symbolism, the coins were offered for sale — a rare chance to own a piece of Financial and Cyber Crime Group history.
This isn’t just a coin. It’s a statement — about the values we stand for, the legacy we protect, and the work we do. From myth to metal, the gryphon is once again on watch.
Until next time....Happy Collecting!
