Coin design
Obverse: The coin’s front features the classic Sacagawea design by Glenna Goodacre, which has been used on all Native American dollars since 2000.
Reverse: The design honors Sequoyah, a Cherokee silversmith who developed the Cherokee syllabary, a writing system adopted by the Cherokee Nation in 1825.
It depicts a profile of Sequoyah writing ”Sequoyah from Cherokee Nation” in syllabary along the border of the coin.
The English inscription ”$1” and ”UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” are also featured.
Edge: The coin’s edge is incused with the year (”2017”), the mint mark (”S”), and the motto ”E PLURIBUS UNUM”.
Collector’s value
For collectors, the 2017-S Sequoyah dollars are more valuable than their face value. The worth of a specific coin depends on its condition, and certified examples in top grades command the highest prices.
