Title:
Walking Liberty half dollar
Description:
Circulating silver half dollar of the United States known as the Walking Liberty half dollar, dated 1942. The obverse features Liberty striding toward the left, draped in the American flag, with her right arm extended and branches of laurel and oak cradled in her left arm. A rising sun with long rays appears at the lower left, symbolizing a new dawn, and the motto ”IN GOD WE TRUST” is to the right. The word ”LIBERTY” arcs around the upper rim and the date 1942 is centered below. The reverse shows a perched bald eagle with partially spread wings standing on a rocky crag with a mountain pine sapling growing from the rock. Around the rim are the inscriptions ”UNITED · STATES · OF · AMERICA” at the top and ”HALF DOLLAR” at the bottom, with the motto ”E · PLURIBUS · UNUM” to the left of the eagle. This type was struck for circulation and is composed of 90% silver and 10% copper, giving it a distinct silver appearance and intrinsic bullion value. The design is considered one of the most beautiful classic U.S. coin designs and later inspired the modern American Silver Eagle bullion coin.
