Title:

2011 September 11 National Medal

Description:
Official United States Mint 2011 September 11 National Medal in presentation case. This proof-quality national medal was authorized by Public Law 111-221, the National September 11 Memorial & Museum Commemorative Medal Act of 2010, to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks and to honor the victims, survivors, and all who responded. Struck in .999 fine silver to a weight of one troy ounce, the medal has a diameter of approximately 1.598 inches (40.6 mm) and a smooth edge. The obverse design, visible in the opened box, features Lady Liberty holding the Lamp of Remembrance with beacons of light rising behind her, symbolizing the nation’s grief, resilience, and the triumph of those who persevered. The inscriptions on the obverse include ”ALWAYS REMEMBER” and the dual dates ”2001–2011.” The reverse design (not visible in the provided photos) depicts a powerful bald eagle against a backdrop of cascading water, representing strength, peace, healing, and the continuity of life, with inscriptions ”HONOR” and ”HOPE.” Medals were struck at both the West Point and Philadelphia Mints with respective ”W” or ”P” mint marks. Up to 2,000,000 pieces were authorized across both mints. Each medal was sold by the U.S. Mint in a black leatherette-style clamshell case with a white interior lid lined with a red, white, and blue ribbon and the words ”United States Mint,” as seen in the images. A surcharge from each sale was designated to support the National September 11 Memorial & Museum at the World Trade Center site.
