The national obverse shows an owl (Athenian “owl” motif, based on an ancient Athenian tetradrachm design) within a square/irregular incuse-style frame; Greek inscription ”1 EYPΩ” (1 EURO in Greek) is visible near the owl. Outer ring shows 12 EU stars with the date at the bottom; the pictured coin appears to be dated 2002. Edge type for this issue is interrupted milled. Designers for this type are commonly listed as Georges Stamatopoulos for the Greek national side and Luc Luycx for the common reverse.
