Obverse (left coin in image): Large numeral value “5” centered with small botanical sprigs (laurel and oak branches) flanking the value; Cyrillic legends around the rim read “ГОСУДАРСТВЕННЫЙ БАНК СССР” (State Bank of the USSR). Below the value is “РУБЛЕЙ” (roubles). At the bottom is the date “1991” with small star separators. Mint mark “ЛМД” (Leningrad Mint) is present.

Reverse (right coin in image): Depicts an owl standing among reeds/vegetation. Cyrillic legends read “КРАСНАЯ КНИГА СССР” (Red Book of the USSR) and the species name “РЫБНЫЙ ФИЛИН” (Blakiston’s fish owl).
