Title:

2006 NZ Silver Proof Coin Set

Description:
The fine silver five-dollar proof coin depicts the beautiful yet acutely threatened New Zealand Falcon (Falco novaeseelandiae), the only falcon found in New Zealand. It is described as the most fearless of New Zealand’s birds, standing its ground in any confrontation. Fearless predators and remarkable hunters they are capable of taking prey up to six times their own body weight.

Worldwide, falcons are renowned as amazing birds with the ability to reach speeds of up to 230 km/h and with eyesight eight times more powerful than humans.

The New Zealand female falcon is larger than the male. A South Island female can weigh as much as 650 grams with the male being approximately 250 grams. Curiously South Island birds are larger than the birds on the North Island.

Many New Zealand falcons are ground nesting and this exposes them, their eggs and chicks to predators such as rats, cats, dogs and ferrets. They nest in spring between August and January; their eggs are a speckled mahogany. Normally three chicks hatch with white plumage, slowly turning to grey at 10 days old and dark brown plumage forming by four weeks of age.

These beautiful and unique creatures are declining in the wild. Fewer than 5000 individuals remain even though they have been fully protected for over 30 years. Of these, only 450 pairs remain on New Zealand’s North Island.
