Title:

2007 AU Proof Coin Set - Year of the Surf Life Saver

Description:
In the late 1890s and early 1900s there was little need for surf lifesaving in Australia. It was illegal for people to swim from beaches in daylight hours, and the idea of men and women swimming together provoked moral outrage. However, as a result of campaigns at a number of different beaches along the NSW coastline, these concerns began to disappear and Australians began the practice of surf bathing in large numbers.

Unfortunately the dangers of surf bathing soon became apparent. This prompted the formation of the first surt lifesaving club, at Bondi in 1907. The same year, the New South Wales Surf Bathing Association was founded - an organisation that evolved into today’s national association, Surf Life Saving Australia. More than 113,000 men, women and children are members of surf lifesaving clubs and the sight of the familiar red and yellow uniform provides reassurance to millions who enjoy Australia’s beautiful surf beaches.

To honour the service of Australia’s volunteer surf lifesavers, 2007 has been declared the national
’Year of the Surf Lifesaver’. This legal tender proof coin set from the Royal Australian Mint commemorates the year. The $1 coin reverse design features a team rescue in progress.
