Title:
Complete Denver Mint Silver Coin Collection 1906
Description:
On April 21, 1862, Congress approved a branch of the United States Mint in Denver.
In 1895, Congress once again authorized the Denver Mint, and a site was purchased on West Colfax Street in 1896 for abt $60,000. The building was completed in 1904 and the production of gold & silver coins started on February 1, 1906 with 3 coining presses. The Denver Mint is still in the same location, it is one of the oldest & grandest public buildings in Colorado.
Coins struck in 90% silver were a mainstay of the Denver Mint from its opening in 1906 until 1964, when 90% silver coins stopped being made for circulation. The most fascinating silver coins struck at Denver include the Morgan silver dollar only made in 1921, the Kennedy half-dollar made only in 1964 and the Barber family of silver coins were the first silver coins ever struck in Denver.
The collection includes one example of each of the 12 different U.S. silver coins that were minted for circulation in 90% silver at the Denver Mint.
