Title:

2007 NZ Silver Proof Coin Set

Description:
This proof finish 2007 year set features a silver frosted proof coin depicting a precious icon of New Zealand - the tuatara.

Tuatara date back 200 million years to the age of the dinosaurs but now they are an endangered species. Although they can live for as long as 100 years, their slow breeding cycle has left them vulnerable. Today, tuatara survive only on some rat-free offshore islands around New Zealand; but recently some have been re-introduced to the mainland at Karori Wildlife Sanctuary as part of an active conservation management programme.

Every effort has been made to produce a realistic depiction of this rare and unique reptile on the coin. The design was carefully drawn, based upon the photograph reproduced on the front of this package which shows a tuatara basking in the sun. Tuatara is a Maori word meaning ”peaks on the back” and the distinctive spines of soft folded skin are clearly visible along the head, back and tail.

Widely regarded as a national treasure in New Zealand, the tuatara is a fitting symbol for this beautiful proof coin.
