2010 NZ Proof Coin Set

Description:
This captivating 2010 New Zealand proof coin set includes a loz pure silver proof (0.999) $5 legal tender coin and tribute to the Maui’s dolphin (Cephalorhynchus hectori maui) - an animal unique to New Zealand and whose very survival is in deadly peril.

Designed in New Zealand and part of an annual series dedicated to New Zealand’s rare and endangered native animals, the $5 feature coin portrays a Maui’s dolphin and its calf at their delightful best - leaping from the waters of their natural habitat near Taranaki, on the west coast of New Zealand’s North Island. The nine ’waves’ on this special coin represent the age at which the Maui’s dolphins reproduce, with the koru shapes providing a distinctive link to the country to which these mammals belong.

Agile, playful and intelligent, the endearingly diminutive Maui’s dolphin shares its name with one of the most famous of Māori heroes - a fisherman who, according to legend, hooked the North Island (called te lka a Maui in Māori). Today, the Maui’s dolphin continues to have strong connections with Māori, especially through the iwi (tribe) of Ngāti te Wehi, who are the guardians (kaitiaki) of the species.

Since 2002 the Maui’s dolphin has been officially recognised as a sub-species of the Hector’s dolphin, having a slightly larger body, different skeletal structure and genetics and a distinctive habitat in the waters between Maunganui Bluff and Tongaporutu. It has distinct black, white and grey markings, and is generally found close to shore in a pod of several dolphins.

Sadly, the Maui’s dolphin is the world’s rarest marine dolphin, with approximately 111 remaining in the wild. It is internationally recognised as ’critically endangered’, and as it is for many other threatened species its greatest threat has been, and continues to be, the activities of man - mainly through commercial and recreational fishing as well as being hit by boats, becoming tangled in marine litter (especially plastics) and pollution such as persistent organic pollutants, pesticides and heavy metals.

Conservation efforts to rescue the Maui’s dolphin from the edge of extinction are essential. These include Government-imposed restrictions on fishing with nets in its main habitat areas. Research by the Department of Conservation, the universities of Auckland and Otago as well as other permitted researchers has enabled a better understanding of the dolphin and its habitat.

This information has been used to manage threats more effectively. With co-operation from land users, fishermen, local iwi and the Government, it is hoped that the Maui’s dolphin can come back from the brink of extinction and survive long into the future.
