Title:
2009 AU Proof Coin Set - International Year of Astronomy
Description:
The year 2009 is the International Year of Astronomy, a global celebration of our universe. The year also marks 400 years since Galileo Galilei first turned his telescope to the night sky and we are reminded of how much we have learned from astronomy over four centuries.
Under the theme ’The Universe, Yours to Discover, the IYA 2009 is an initiative of the International Astronomical Union and is endorsed by the UN and UNESCO. The year highlights the study of astronomy by professional scientific organisations and countless hobbyists worldwide. In Australia alone, there are over thirty active amateur astronomical societies.
The aim of International Year of Astronomy in Australia is to raise awareness of our country’s contributions to international astronomy, to encourage young people to engage with the natural world and to promote science and tachhology as a whole.
Australia is already well and truly on the international astronomical map, with projects like the Parkes Observatory. Since it began operation in 1961, the observatory has helped astronomers discover 10,000 new galaxies. The International Year of Astronomy will no doubt bring the stars closer to home for all Australians and world citizens alike.
