Synopsis:
Synopsis for ”The Best Man!”
The story opens with Zorro dropping in on the feared Valderama gang. They were in the midst of harassing and robbing an elderly couple, but Zorro made quick work of them, allowing them to escape, because he had to get back to his hacienda for his cousin arrival. On the way back Zorro thinks about his double life being Don Diego de la Vega, and the efforts to keep it secret.
He arrives in time to meet his cousin Raphael and his fiancé Margarita de Madera. His fiancé had a fantasy of meeting Zorro, and she mentions this to Don Diego. They make a trip into the Pueblo of Los Angeles, but Don Diego remains at home. While in Los Angeles, Sergeant Mendoza is going to confiscate the land of a man for not paying his taxes. Raphael and Don Alejandro protest this, and Zorro arrives on the scene. There was an explosion of and a safe of the Alcade’s was blown open, and from a rooftop Zorro opens a bag of gold coins and states the taxes for two years of all the citizens would be paid. In the scuffle that follows, Zorro complements Victoria Escalante on her beauty, but Margarita de Madera thinks she is speaking to her.
Back at Don Alejandro’s hacienda, Margarita states that she cannot marry Raphael, for she is in love with Zorro. She tells Don Diego that Zorro complimented her on her beauty. He tries to explain perhaps it was someone else, but to no avail. With a short period of time the wedding is off, and Raphael dutifully wants to return his former fiancé back to her parents in Santa Barbara.
As Raphael was leaving the town, they were accosted by the Valderama gang, but Raphael quickly begins to subdue some of the armed swordsman. With a little assistance from Zorro, they are mostly defeated, and Zorro explains to Raphael, that he is winning the affections of his fiancé, back, and tosses him his sword. After a display of bravado, on Raphael’s part and submission on Zorro’s part, Margarita states that she no longer has affections for Zorro. She asked for forgiveness and encourages Raphael that he might want to ask to marry her again. Mendoza shows up to arrest the gang of banditos and take them back to Los Angeles.
