In this Bronze Age installment from Wonder Woman’s depowered Diana Prince era, executive editor Carmine Infantino oversees a tale crafted by Mike Sekowsky as writer, penciler, and editor, with Dick Giordano’s inks bringing the action to vivid life. The story plunges into the medieval-inspired conflict in the land of Chalandor, where Diana aligns with the rebel North Ambrian forces under leaders Ranagor and the valiant champion Thanagor. Their target: the impregnable Castle Skull, stronghold of the despotic Queen of Chalandor and her fierce warrior Thang.

The assault begins disastrously, with the North Ambrians enduring devastating casualties against the fortress’s defenses. Turning the battle with her resourcefulness, Diana improvises primitive cannons to smash through the walls, allowing the attackers to press forward. To resolve the siege, the Queen and Thang propose single combat against Diana and Thanagor. In a brutal clash, Thanagor defeats and kills Thang, but the Queen backs out of her duel with Diana, exposing her cowardice. Emboldened, the North Ambrian army overruns the city, claiming victory.

The fallen Queen faces a poetic punishment: banishment to roam the countryside among the people she once brutalized, who will likely deliver their own form of retribution. Queen Hippolyta and the Amazons of Paradise Island arrive post-battle, too late for the fight but perfectly timed to whisk the weary Diana back to Paradise Island for a week of healing and respite.

Spotlighting Diana of Paradise Island (Earth-One) as the featured hero, the issue features supporting roles from the Amazons, including Hippolyta, alongside Ranagor and Thanagor. The primary antagonists are the Queen of Chalandor and Thang (who meets his end), with background appearances by the oppressed Chalandorians. The entire saga unfolds in the fictional realm of Chalandor, centered on the ominous Castle Skull.

This comic captures the sword-and-sorcery flair that characterized some of Wonder Woman’s adventures in the early 1970s, blending fantasy elements with themes of tyranny, ingenuity, and justice. It has been reprinted in the collection Diana Prince: Wonder Woman Vol. 3. While not regarded as a key issue—lacking major first appearances or series milestones—it serves as a solid chapter in the experimental, non-costumed phase of the Amazon’s Bronze Age tales.

For price comparisons as of early 2026, mid-grade copies (VG to FN) generally range from $15–$35 on platforms like eBay and MyComicShop, with recent sales including a Good at $11.75, a VG 4.0 at $22.50, a VF/VF+ at $20, and a VF- around $30–$40. Higher grades are scarcer, with auction data suggesting CGC NM/MT 9.8 examples could fetch $200+ in premium conditions, though sales are infrequent. Overstreet values for NM- 9.2 hover around $100–$150, adjusted for current market trends. Digital versions appear in eBook collections on Amazon for $1.99–$2.99, but physical copies are limited to third-party sellers at similar market rates, with no new stock available directly from Amazon.
