Adventure Comics

Synopsis:
Synopsis for ”Treachery”
As making a shopping trip, Linda Danvers is approached by a saleslady who places a pair of glasses on her face. Linda’s super-strength is unable to remove them, and wondering what kind of trap she has fallen into, Linda leaves.

Her actions are monitored by an alien warlord called Gur and his brother from their undersea base. They’ve been watching Supergirl for a while until discovering her secret identity, which allowed one of their secret agents to place their mind-control glasses on her.

On San Francisco, Kara receives a message through her glasses. Unable to disobey her orders, she flies to Metropolis and gets Superman to put on a pair of alien glasses. Her cousin falls under Gur’s domination as well. Then Gur gets his operator order them to change into their costumes and head to the base.

Gur plans to use them to control every super-hero on Earth through the glasses, and turn them into his space-army. His brother chides it for it, stating their race has no need for further conquests or slaves, and Gur is carrying that operation forward for his own amusement.

Supergirl and Superman arrive at their base, but because they weren’t ordered to come peacefully, they begin tearing the place apart. Gur quickly commands them to cease their attack and executes his crewman for his carelessness.

Gur wants to test his Kryptonian slaves’ powers, but Supergirl’s powers are malfunctioning. Disgusted, he tells Superman to take more mind-controlling glasses and trick his fellow Leaguers into putting them on.

Meanwhile, Supergirl feels her power returning, and since she hasn’t been given specific orders, she resumes her attack until Gur orders her to stop again. Gru decides to test both Supergirl’s powers and his brother’s leadership capabilities, so he tells him to order Supergirl to use her powers to kill a slave. Gur’s brother is fed up with his sibling’s megalomania and tells Supergirl to use her heat vision.

Supergirl’s heat vision melts the glasses. Supergirl leaps into action immediately, knocking Gur and his crew down. Though she can’t stay to finish the job off. Quickly she heads out to the Justice League Satellite and storms into the place before Superman tricks his teammates.

Superman begins fighting her and the other Leaguers. At Supergirl’s prompting, Green Lantern uses his ring to destroy Superman’s glasses, removing him from the aliens’ control.

Meanwhile, back at the spaceship, Gur goes after his treacherous brother, breaches the hull of his ship with a ray-blast, and is shot by one of his own soldiers. Gur’s brother goes below to die with Gur as the waters flood the below decks of their ship.

Later, Superman and Supergirl build the remaining aliens a new spacecraft so they can return home.

Notes
Supergirl’s powers worked intermittently since she was fed a depowering pill in Adventure Comics #402. Since then she resorted to a Kandorian exo-skeleta-cyborg and later a power bracelet to perform heroics while her powers were off. Her malfunctioning powers aren’t mentioned again after this issue.
This issue lists Steve Skeates as writer (Dialogue) and does not list John Albano (see ”Talk” for this issue).
