Title:
Weapon X: Days of Future Now
Synopsis:
Twenty-four years in the future, Wolverine and his new X-Men team return to New York City after a long absence. Cable, Juggernaut, Lady Deathstrike, Toad, and Wolverine’s wife, Warbird, move to the meeting place. There, they meet up with the gathered team of Excelsior, X-Force, Acolytes, Gene Nation, Archangel’s team, and the Brotherhood. Logan hopes that everyone is going to let bygones be bygones, especially Chamber, who has finally broken free from Weapon X but lost his face because of it, and the rest of his Weapon X refugee team members.
After an almost tussle between Wolverine and Sabretooth, Magneto reveals his presence. The Acolytes joyfully run to their Master but then reveal their true colors: they are actually Nimrods in disguise. More Sentinels appear as well, but Magneto manages to destroy them all.
Later, he, Wolverine, and Warbird travel to the Blue Area of the Moon, where they enroll the aid of the Avengers and the Fantastic Four in their never-ending battle against the Sentinels. Putting their differences aside and trusting Magneto, the heroes all end up massacred. Wolverine realizes the truth: Magneto tipped off Weapon X about their gathered strength and battle plans, so the humans would finally see the error of building more Sentinels and shut them down. Logan wants to kill Magneto for this, but he attempts to calm Logan down by telling him he can be more useful alive.
Back at their base, the Director meets up with Doctor Nathan Milbury and attends a briefing with Sauron. Malcolm discovers that Karl is a traitor who works with Magneto and kills him for that.
Later, Magneto, Wolverine, and the surviving mutants attend a meeting with the media in an attempt to prove how bad the Sentinels are.
Elsewhere in Argentina, Fantomex goes to a bar where he discovers that the bartender is actually Brent Jackson.
Notes:
Unlike previous issues, this story only takes place over one parallel timeline, namely 24 years in a possible future.
Wolverine’s and Warbird’s marriage happened only off-panel and probably a few years before this issue began.
Cable originally joined the X-Men off-panel prior to Uncanny X-Men #381 but later quit in Cable (2nd series) #88. Juggernaut joined the team in Uncanny X-Men #412.
Archangel and Juggernaut had seemingly died last issue because of Agent Zero’s betrayal, but they somehow managed to “get better,” though it’s not clear how. It’s curious though, as so far, only Deadpool and Agent Zero have strong enough healing powers boosted by the Weapon X Program to survive such an attack, but neither are shown in this issue besides in a flashback.
This issue reveals that Black Tom Cassidy has finally been cured of his “tree-condition” but not exactly clarified how. It also reveals that Frenzy didn’t die in the Sentinel attack on Genosha in New X-Men (1st series) #116 as feared by most fans. Ricochet is the only true original member of the Excelsior team, as shown in Runaways (2nd series) #1-6. It also confirms that Earth-616 Mimic truly is still alive and seems to have his original X-Men powers, as it was believed he lost them because of the High Evolutionary’s attack as seen in Uncanny X-Men #379.
Chamber is finally free from the Weapon X Program after his disappearance in Weapon X (2002) #21, though it’s not clarified what really caused him to lose his head over it, and why he chose to wear the Xorn helmet but that is probably to be able to store his psionic energy.
After the death of Bolt, his partner during the time he was still Maverick, Agent Zero lost control and hunted down the second incarnation of the Gene Nation team. After killing some of its members in Weapon X (2002) #21, he chose to let Marrow live. Apparently, as said this issue, she has been killed for some unexplained reason afterward.
Nathan Milbury, the man leading the Director through the Empire State Building hallways, is an old alias of Mr. Sinister, which he created in 1891 as revealed in Gambit (3rd series) #13, though in the comics first used it in X-Men (2nd series) #22. He originally infiltrated in the Weapon X under the fake alias of Charles Windsor but had to undo himself from that identity after being discovered by Sabretooth.
