Following substantial work by the Long Island Ducks and the County of Suffolk, Fairfield Properties Ballpark will have a very different look to it when the team takes flight for the 25th Anniversary Season, presented by Catholic Health. Throughout the offseason, Long Island’s hometown team had the playing surface of its home field converted from natural grass and dirt to an all-turf layout
”This Capital Improvement is part of the ongoing effort by the County of Suffolk to update County buildings while keeping Fairfield Properties Ballpark operating at the highest professional level in partnership with the Long Island Ducks,” said Suffolk County Executive Ed Romaine.
These new upgrades to the ballpark include full replacement of the entire playing surface, the pitching mound and the bullpens to fietdTurf. In addition, a brand new padded ouffield wall was installed, to improve player safety and bring the ballpark closer to Major League standards.
”Keeping our ballpark atop the list of favored destinations for Major League players looking to continue their careers is important,” said Ducks President/Chief Business Officer Michael Pfaff ”This project, along with our commitment to keeping ticket prices affordable and parking free, allow us to continue to deliver on our promise of providing the most fun, fan friendly and affordable entertainment experience on Long Island for many years to come.”
The new surface is known officially as FieldTurf Prestige Vertex. It is comprised of specially designed slit-film fibers and high performance ridge monofilament fibers, which allows for proper infill encapsulation and facilitates a grass-like ball roll. Both fibers are tufted together in the same stitch for a superior aesthetic appearance.
There are numerous benefits to converting the playing surface of Fairfield Properties Ballpark to fieldTurf. From a player perspective, the field will continue to maintain the feel of playing on natural grass but will offer more consistent bounces and footing. Environmentally and operationally, there will be significant efficiencies.
”The new turf field will improve efficiency greatly, save millions of gallons of water per year, and be more environmentally friendly,” noted Romaine, ”eliminating the need for fertilizer and chemicals on the play. ing surface in future seasons.”
While the County of Suffolk looks after and owns several facilities on Long Island, the home of the Ducks has continued to remain a high ority. Ensuring a safe, well-maintained environment for both players and fans is incredibly important, as the ballpark celebrates its 25th birthday, ”The Long Island Ducks are champions off and on the field ” exclaimed Romaine. ”For 25 years, the Ducks have provided our resi. dents and families with great entertainment at affordable prices.•
He added, ”The 2025 season looks to be an exciting chapter tor the Ducks. Through these upgrades, the Ducks will be able to continue to attract elite talent to Long Island and continue its stellar reputation in sending players to the Major Leagues.”
The Long Island Ducks are now the eighth team in the ID-team Atlantic League to feature an artificial playing surface. the York Revolution and Southern Maryland Blue Crabs remain the onw two clubs whose home ballparks continue to feature natural grass and dirt
