Title:

MAD #136

Description:
Movie parody of Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid.
Television parody of Room 222.

MAD #136 was the very first issue that I ever saw being sold at a comic book convention. I had never been to a Comic-Con before (and technically I don’t believe that Raleigh, NC actually was hosting one, but a convention is a convention, right?) and I had never planned on going to one. And not going to one included the one that I found myself in during my sophomore year in college. I had gone shopping for groceries at the local shopping center and I accidentally wandered into a gymnasium sized room lined with long tables. It was easy to see that most of the tables held stacks of comic books, but none of that impressed me so I started to head out through the exit at the far end of the room. Fortunately, my journey towards the exit took me past a table loaded with MAD issues that I had never seen before. I was stopped in my tracks, mesmerized by issues that were numbered in the 100s (my earliest issue was #199). Just looking at them was reward enough for unknowingly stumbling into that room, but then I saw Issue 136. I love MAD covers that depict a movie poster style as its artwork, and seeing Alfred E. Newman cavorting with Paul Neuman, Robert Redford and Katherine Ross in a takeoff of a scene from Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid immediately had me reaching for my back pocket, not yet knowing the cost of the magazine or what I had in my wallet. But it all worked out and I found myself walking away with Issue 136, along with Issues 134 and 138. That experience changed me for I had always believed that whatever issues existed before I started reading MAD would always be lost to me. Now that I knew that they were, in fact, obtainable I made it my mission to return the next day, unencumbered by my friend’s presence, to do some serious browsing. And so I did...only to discover that the previous day was the convention’s last. Like I said, I knew nothing of comic book conventions, for if I had I would have realized that there are actual start and end dates set up for them. Still, the idea of keeping an eye out for old issues was planted, and it wouldn’t be the last time that luck would shine on me and I would come across other opportunities to increase my collection of back issues, of which I suddenly had three!
