Title:
MAD #208
Year:
2020
Description:
Movie Parody: Supersuperman
TV Parody: Cattlecar Galaxia
This MAD issue was first purchased by my sister Courtney, and by that time she knew that I was a huge fan of the magazine and that I would gobble it up as soon as she was done with it. But even with my well known enthusiasm for the magazine, Issue No. 208 has a dark story to tell, one that I’m still a bit ashamed to recall. In 1981 my father still had a job in Philadelphia, despite moving the family to North Carolina over two years before, and during the summer of that year, in three separate trips back to Pennsylvania, he brought me (on every trip) and a different sister of mine each time. And on every trip I got into a fight with every single one of them. This included a fight with my oldest sister Courtney over something so small and meaningless that I cannot remember what it could have been about (I think we were just a little stir crazy). I do, however, remember what I did. As young siblings, you do or say whatever you can out of anger in order to hurt the ones you love. And that, I guess, included me ripping up one of her latest issue of MAD magazine, the one with the classic depiction of Christopher Reeve in his first appearance as Superman flying through the air with Alfred E. Newman on the cover. I still can’t believe that I could have done such a thing. I don’t remember my sister’s actual reaction other than that I destroyed something that belonged to her. But for me, once my stupid anger subsided, I couldn’t believe that I ripped up something that I loved and could never repair or believe could be replaced. And I’m serious when I say that even though I did purchase another MAD #208 many years later, I still feel guilty about taking away Courtney’s (though I know she never really cared).
