Title:
MAD #202
Description:
Movie parody: Coma-Toast
TV parody: Lust Boat
MAD #202 boasts what I have always felt is the best drawn satire by Angelo Torres in “Lust Boat”. He has countless other contributions throughout his decades-long career with MAD, but I always, without fail, return to this issue to admire his stellar work. Like Mort Drucker, Torres doesn’t do full on caricatures. In fact, he does so even less than Drucker. But the likenesses of his subjects mixed in with quirky expressions or impossible places to fit them create a very humorous situational panel. Examine the expression on Doc’s face as he sits next to a pregnant woman, one that he had a dalliance with just a few panels before. Or look at the pride of Captain Stupid’s face as he mindlessly babbles on about the greatness of his ship. To me, there isn’t a misplaced line in any of the panel drawings. The details expand to the edges, little touches of Torres’ humor as well as his intricate display of capabilities. I read this satire over and over, but I tend to look at it more than any other satire found in MAD.
