Title:
Far And Away
Synopsis:
Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman star in this critically-acclaimed romantic adventure from director Ron Howard. This breathtaking epic opens on the west coast of Ireland, 1892. Joseph Donelly (Cruise), a poor tenant farmer, is determined to bring justice to an oppressive landlord (Robert Prosky). Instead, he finds himself accompanying the landlord’s daughter, Shannon (Kidman), to America in a quest for land.
Arriving in Boston, Joseph finds a place for them to live while proving a natural at bare-fisted boxing. But his triumph is short-lived as he and Shannon are thrown out into the bitter cold. Their bickering eventually reveals their true feelings for one another, just as they are separated by a grim turn of events.
Joseph sets off for work on the railroad, until a passing wagon train reminds him of his original goal to possess his own land. Preparing to stake his claim in the new territory, he runs into Shannon, who is unhappily reunited with her former fiancé (Thomas Gibson).
In the excitement of the Oklahoma land rush, they realize their dreams of land and life together in this satisfying grand-scale adventure that WNCN Radio calls “Ron Howard’s best film - a wondrous epic!”
TRIVIA:
• Director Rob Howard wasn’t happy with Nicole Kidman’s facial reaction during the shooting of the scene where her character lifts the bowl covering Joseph’s crotch. Without telling Kidman, he asked Cruise to remove his underwear. The scene was reshot, Howard got the reaction he wanted and it appears in the final film.
• The dress that Shannon admires in the shop window in Boston is one of the same dresses worn by Clara Clayton (Mary Steenburgen) in the last scene of BACK TO THE FUTURE PART III.
• The recreation of the Great Land Rush involves 800 extras, 400 horses and 200 wagons. The extras were all recruited from a re-enactment society called the The Re-enactors.
• Three of Ron Howard’s great-grandparents actually rose in the Great Land Rush of 1893, as depicted in the film.
• Tom Cruise (Joseph Donelly) and Thomas Gibson (Stephen Chase) were both born on July 3, 1962.
• The first and last feature since RYAN’S DAUGHTER to use the Super 65mm format. It would not be used again until Kenneth Branagh’s film adaptation of HAMLET in 1996 and again in 2012 with Paul Thomas Anderson’s THE MASTER.
• The is the second film Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman starred in together. The first was DAYS OF THUNDER, two years earlier and the most recent was 1999’s EYES WIDE SHUT.
• The boxing scenes were filmed in the partially renovated train station in Billings, Montana. An abandoned Price Club in Billings served as both a factory to produce rubber chickens used in the film and a soundstage for the brothel Joseph and Shannon reside in. The brothel was built inside and fire pumps were applied to to create rain.
• This was Cyril Cusack’s (Danty Duff) final film before his death on October 7, 1993 at the age of 82.
• Ron Howard asked Rod Steiger to audition for the role of landowner Daniel Christie, which greatly infuriated the Oscar-winning actor. He did, but failed to win the part. Richard Harris was also asked, but he flatly refused. The part ultimately went to character actor Robert Prosky.
• Temple Bar, in Dublin’s city center, was shut down for at least three months to accommodate the construction of the bordello street set. Local shops and businesses were well compensated for the inconvenience. Despite that, the entire street set is only glimpsed briefly during the film.
• Sean Bean was considered for the role of Stephen Chase.
