Title:
Ae Fond Kiss
Synopsis:
For four decades Ken Loach has been fighting the good fight by giving a voice to a global underclass united by socio-economic or political oppression. It’s an admirable approach, yet one that has led to him being pigeonholed as a peddler of working class defeatism. Ae Fond Kiss..., his latest film with long-time collaborator Paul Laverty takes a different tack. The third part in a loose trilogy of films set in the west of Scotland (after My Name Is Joe and Sweet Sixteen) this interracial love story is as socially aware as any of his output but inherently more positive in its outlook. In the Asian community of Glasgow’s South Side, Casim (Yaqub) is representative of many second-generation Pakistanis who live a double life. A DJ with dreams of opening his own club, he is nevertheless loyal to his devout Muslim parents and compliant in their plans for him to marry his first cousin. However, when he meets Roisin (Birthistle), an Irish music teacher at the Catholic school his little sister attends (she’s sent there for the discipline), things start to go awry. Embarking on a passionate affair, their relationship soon starts having serious consequences for both of them. A compelling, uplifting and realistic look at the complexities surrounding mixed race relationships, this represents an impressive counterpoint to Loach’s more harrowing work.
