Synopsis:

In 1935 on the Tallis family estate in rural England, young Briony Tallis falsely accuses Robbie Turner, the son of the family housekeeper, of raping her cousin after witnessing a secret romance between Robbie and her sister Cecilia. Robbie is sent to prison. Four years later in 1940, with World War II underway, Robbie joins the British forces retreating from Dunkirk in France. Meanwhile Cecilia works as a nurse in London and Briony, wracked with guilt, becomes a nurse herself and attempts to atone for the devastating mistake that tore the lovers apart.
