Title:

Invasion of the Body Snatchers

Synopsis:
”Invasion of the Body Snatchers” is the original movie ver-
sion of a story that has fascinated and terrified millions since it first appeared as a serial in the old Collier’s Magazine. Walter Wanger’s gripping film, starring Kevin McCarthy and Dana becomes av Wynter, has been a cult classic since its release in 1956. The hometown. recent Hollywood remake of the story pays it due homage by loves, he tri using one of the original film’s most effective scenes.

The movie is the terrifyingly suspenseful story of the invasion of Earth by an alien life form. Seeds, floating in space, have landed in Santa Mira, a small California town. Nourished by the fertile coastal soil, the seeds grow into giant pods which, when they mature, burst open to reveal a ”blank”—a form which can take any human shape and eventually consume a human mind, becoming in the process a perfect double, exactly the same as the individual it has usurped, except for one thing: it has no emotions, except for the indomitable will to survive. The pods ripen and mature by themselves, but can only become human while their living model, the person from whom they will drain all individuality, is asleep.
Kevin McCarthy stars as Dr. Miles Bennell, who gradually becomes aware of the evil that is taking over his usually placid hometown. With Dana Wynter, who co-stars as the woman he loves, he tries first to prevent the pods from destroying any further lives. Unable to stop their ruthless, relentless invasion and distortion of the very souls of the people he has known all his life, Bennell then tries to warn the rest of the world.

The movie is riveting, full of tension and suspense, from beginning to end, but probably its most memorable- and most fa-mous-scene is the one in which Dr. Bennell tries to stop cars on a busy highway to tell them of the danger they face, the force which is spreading and waiting to obliterate them. The very predictability of their reactions heightens the feeling of frustration and doom, of helplessness before the unknown, which only the best of vintage science fiction screenplays can do.

Larry Gates, King, Donovan and Carolyn Jones co-star in
”Invasion of the Body Snatchers. Produced by Walter Wagner, the film was directed by Don Siegel. Its screenplay, by Daniel Mainwaring, was based on the original Colliers Magazine serial by Jack Finney.

Combining all the best elements of suspense and science fiction to tell a story that is both imaginative and realistic in its development, ”Invasion of the Body Snatchers” is more than a piece about survival in the face of an alien threat, one which destroys without trace of emotion or feeling. It is a fascinating probe into our psyches, our selves, a sharply critical look at those things which make us human; in its special genre, it is a vital study of a man, and mankind, on the brink of a most bizarre, unimaginable kind of extinction. ”Invasion of the Body Snatchers” is an adventure story, a love story, a science fiction thriller, a tale of survival that reaches into our innermost being.
