Title:

The Polar Express (VHS)

Synopsis:
On Christmas Eve, a little boy who does not believe in Santa Claus is awakened in the middle of the night by a train that passes in front of his house. The controller invites him to get on board, announcing that this magical train is going to the North Pole. Incredulous but curious, the kid embarks on a passenger car where there are a dozen other children. At a new stop, a very shy little boy gets in turn on the train. Before arriving at their destination, young passengers will experience many strong emotions, especially when one of the children loses his precious ticket or when the train starts at high speed on a frozen lake. At the end of this eventful journey, the kids will discover Santa’s village, where thousands of elves live. There too, they will be entitled to some surprises.

MEDIAFILM’S OPINION

Robert Zemeckis has a penchant for technological challenges. Let us remember, for example, WHO FRAMED ROGER RABBIT, in which actors and cartoon characters coexisted. With THE POLAR EXPRESS, the director uses digital effects to transpose into an animated film the movements of actors captured by electronic sensors. Thus, Tom Hanks lends not only his voice to various characters in the film, but also his gestures and the expressions of his face. The result appears sometimes very natural, sometimes artificial and even a little strange. Adapted from a short classic Christmas story, THE POLAR EXPRESS presents itself as a dream tale where adventure and magic almost constantly coexist. Zemeckis was able to happily exploit the large snowy spaces that the train crosses in the middle of the night, to create a climate that is both magical and mysterious, which eventually becomes more fanciful when the heroes arrive at the North Pole. Some pieces of bravery are amazing, but the film is not completely free of cuddiness and heaviness. Nevertheless, the whole is a rather impressive show from a technical level.
