Title:
Stanley Kubrick: Warner Home Video Directors Series
Synopsis:
1) 2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY (1968) 96% - In this surreal sci-fi classic, a mysterious black monolith appears on Earth in prehistoric times, changing the course of human evolution. When it reappears on the Moon in 2001, astronauts embark on an ill-fated interplanetary voyage to discover.
2) A CLOCKWORK ORANGE (1971) 90% - Urban thugs run wild and new methods of crime deterrence are being explored. Career gang member Alex is nabbed by the police and offered the chance to a commuted sentence if he undergoes a kind of surgical therapy. One where his brain does not allow him to execute his violent urges.
3) THE SHINING (1980) 91% - Jack Torrance becomes the caretaker of the Overlook Hotel in up in the secluded mountains of Colorado. Jack, being a family man, takes his wife and son to the hotel to keep him company throughout the long, isolated nights. During their stay, strange things occur when Jack’s son Danny sees gruesome images powered by a force called ’the shining’ and Jack is heavily affected by this. Along with writer’s block and the demons of the hotel haunting him, Jack has a complete mental breakdown and the situation takes a sinister turn for the worse.
4) FULL METAL JACKET (1987) 95% - The story of an 18-year-old marine recruit named Private Joker - from his carnage- and-machismo boot camp to his climactic involvement in the heavy fighting in Hue during the 1968 Tet Offensive.
5) EYES WIDE SHUT (1999) 74% - Cruise plays Dr. William Harford, who plunges into an erotic foray that threatens his marriage — and may even ensnare him in a lurid murder mystery — after his wife’s (Kidman) admission of sexual longings. As the story sweeps from doubt and fear to self-discovery and reconciliation, Kubrick orchestrates it with masterful flourishes. Graceful tracking shots, controlled pacing, rich colors, startling images: bravura traits that make Kubrick a filmmaker for the ages are here to keep everyone’s eyes wide open.
6) STANLEY KUBRICK: A LIFE IN PICTURES (2001) 85% - The moviemaker’s career comes into sharp focus in this compelling documentary narrated by Tom Cruise. Fascinating footage glimpses Kubrick in his early years, at work on film sets and at home, augmented by candid commentary from collaborators, colleagues and family.
