High-powered San Francisco defense attorney Claire Kubik appears to have the perfect life: a prestigious job, a loving husband, and plans to start a family. Her world is shattered when her husband is suddenly arrested by federal agents and revealed to be Ron Chapman, a former Marine who has been living under an assumed identity. Ron is accused of taking part in a secret military operation in El Salvador in the late 1980s that ended with the massacre of innocent villagers, and he now faces a court-martial for multiple counts of murder. Convinced of her husband’s innocence but unfamiliar with the rules of military justice, Claire takes on his defense and enlists the help of Charlie Grimes, a cynical but brilliant former Army judge advocate. As they dig deeper, Claire and Charlie uncover a dangerous cover-up involving high-ranking officers, disappearing witnesses, and falsified evidence. Every step closer to the truth puts them in greater danger, forcing Claire to question not only the military system but also everything she thought she knew about the man she married.
