Synopsis:
Shadowboxer is an emotionally-charged, full-throttle thrill ride, which delves deep into the harsh underworld of organized crime and uncovers the complex lives of trained assassins, Mikey (Cuba Gooding Jr.) and Rose (Helen Mirren) and Mickey (Cuba Gooding Jr.), her lover and stepson.
When a sadistic crime boss (Stephen Dorff) hires the duo to murder his wife (Vanessa Ferlito), Rose discovers that the woman is pregnant and refuses to finish the job. After helping her deliver the child, they set out for a harrowing life on the run, promising to protect their adopted family from the people who want them dead.
For the scene where Stephen Dorff’s character has sex with the stripper and at the end the actor does full frontal nudity, director Lee Daniels, in his directorial debut, shot the moment with several stages of erection, knowing the MPAA would veto the fully erect shot, and like that getting away with the one he really wanted, the semi-erect shot.
Anjelica Huston was considered for the role of Rose (Helen Mirren)
LL Cool J and Yasiin Bey were considered for the role of Mickey (Cuba Gooding Jr.)
Ryan Phillippe was originally cast in the role of Mickey, but had to drop out due to a scheduling conflict.
Wes Bentley was scheduled to star as Clayton, but dropped out. The part went to Stephen Dorff
