Sleeping With the Enemy

A young woman fakes her death in an attempt to escape her nightmarish marriage, but discovers it is impossible to elude her controlling husband.

Julia Roberts’ lead role in this film was originally written for Jane Fonda.

At one time the stars that were attached to the film’s lead roles were Kim Basinger, Sean Connery and Aidan Quinn.

The film initially received a rating of NC-17 when submitted to the MPAA. An NC-17 rating can be severely detrimental to a film, as it both limits advertisement in the US and the amount of theaters that will show it. To avoid this and ensure the film makes a profit, the movie was cut down to an R rating. This was accomplished by cutting several seconds of the first sex scene between Martin (Bergin ) and Laura (Roberts). The full version of this scene can be found in the International Version, which is the version that was shown in the UK, as well as other parts of Europe.
