Action Jackson

Like a blast from a .44 magnum, Carl Weathers makes Action Jackson a hero who delivers the goods in charisma and excitement. He plays Detroit Police Sgt. Jericho Jackson, pitted against the brutal thugs of ruthless auto tycoon Peter Dellaplane (Craig T Nelson), who’s out to murder his way to political power. Jackson’s also involved with Dellaplane’s beautiful wife Patrice (Sharon Stone)- and his exotic mistress Sydney (singer Vanity). Framed up and hunted down by his fellow officers, Jackson sets up a desperate showdown that hurls Action Jackson towards a heart-stopping climax.

Carl Weathers came up with the idea for the film on the set of Predator (1987), during conversations with producer Joel Silver about their shared love of 1970s blaxploitation films. The title was born after Weathers spoke to an Australian crew member about the project. To indicate his interest in working on the film, the crew member said, ”I’m in like Action Jackson.” Predator costars Bill Duke and Sonny Landham also appear in this film.

The studio hoped to turn the film into a franchise, but it never happened. Dangerous Passion (1990), a totally unrelated film which also starred Carl Weathers, was re-titled ’Action Jackson 2’ in some countries.

Both Carl Weathers and Vanity appeared in the music video for this film’s theme song, ”He Turned Me Out,” by The Pointer Sisters. The clip featured the two playing pool in a bar, with Vanity beating Carl handily, as the Pointers sang around them.

Pop singer, dancer, and television personality Paula Abdul conducted the dance choreography seen in the film.

The movie in 1989 was nominated for a Golden Raspberry Award for Vanity for Worst Actress but lost out on the Razzie Award to Liza Minnelli for both Rent-a-Cop (1987) and Arthur 2: On the Rocks (1988).
