In the far future, a highly sexual woman is assigned to fight and stop the evil Durand-Durand. Along the way she encounters various unusual people.
Ian McKellen flew to Rome to audition for a role. Although he didn’t get this, he told Empire magazine that Jane Fonda cooked him breakfast while he was waiting to do his read through.
Jane Fonda dubbed herself for the French version.
English actor David Hemmings replaced Italian actor Antonio Sabato in the role of Dildano. Set photos exist of Sabato playing the famous ”hand sex” scene with Jane Fonda. Sabato’s performance was deemed to be too serious and he was replaced, in more comedic tone, by Hemmings.
When Virna Lisi was asked to play Barbarella, she terminated her contract with United Artists and returned to Italy.
Brigitte Bardot and Sophia Loren turned down the title role.
Jane Fonda recommended John Phillip Law to Roger Vadim because they had become friends during the making of Hurry Sundown (1967).
