Re-Animator

A medical student and his girlfriend become involved in a bizarre experiment into reanimating the dead conducted by the student’s incorrigible housemate in this campy sendup of an H.P. Lovecraft story. The emphasis is on humour but once the dead walk, there is gore aplenty.

The first cut of the film was two and a half hours long. The released version is 87 minutes.

The Dr. Carl Hill role was originally written for Christopher Lee. But, when Lee turned the role down, David Gale was chosen instead.

Barbara Crampton told Entertainment Weekly in October 2020 that she came in on a second round of auditions for the role of Meg because the girl who won the part in the first round of auditions turned it down after her mother read the script and said ”Oh, no. You’re not doing this.”

The film is director Stuart Gordon directorial debut.

The film was never given a rating by the MPAA as the filmmakers knew the film would be given the dreaded ’X’ due to the high amount of blood and gore. An ’R’ rated version replacing most of the gore with deleted scenes was later released on VHS along with the unrated version.

Actor David Gale’s wife divorced him shortly after this film’s release. In the DVD’s audio commentary, the rest of the cast suspects that the scene when the reanimated body of his character, Dr. Hill, attempts to rape Megan was the cause of divorce.
