Synopsis:

Heidi (1952) is a beloved Swiss film adaptation of Johanna Spyri’s novel, directed by Luigi Comencini and starring Elsbeth Sigmund as the young orphan Heidi, who is sent to live with her gruff grandfather in the Swiss Alps. The film follows her idyllic life with her grandfather and shepherd friend Peter, her forced move to Frankfurt to be a companion for a wealthy girl named Clara, and her eventual return to the mountains, capturing the story’s themes of love, nature, and homesickness. It is praised for its authenticity, lack of kitsch, and beautiful Swiss scenery, and was followed by a sequel, Heidi und Peter (1955).
