Synopsis:
This musical version of Don Quixote is framed by an incident allegedly from the life of its author, Miguel de Cervantes.
Jailed during the Spanish Inquisition for offending the church, author Miguel de Cervantes (Peter O’toole) is forced to act out one of his manuscripts for the entertainment of his fellow inmates.
Cervantes delivers a rapturous performance as the legendary Don Quixote, the chivalrous knight who chooses to see life as it should be, not as it is (where he is a mad, aging nobleman who embarrasses his respectable family by his adventures). Backed by his faithful sidekick Sancho Panza, his adventures take him into battles with an imaginary foe, where he duels windmills and defends his perfect, beautiful lady Dulcinea (Sophia Loren), who is actually a downtrodden prostitute named Aldonza.
