Title:
Copying Beethoven
Synopsis:
Copying Beethoven is an imaginative exploration of Beethoven’s life, set in Vienna in 1824, during his final days working on the Ninth. Profoundly deaf, he calls for the assistance of a copyist in order to complete the symphony in time for the first scheduled performance. An insightful conservatory student, Anna Holtz (Kruger), is recommended and despite Beethoven’s deep reservations about a woman being involved in his masterpiece, Holtz is employed. By the time the piece is performed - a moment in history captured in an exquisitely moving shot from Anna’s perspective, as she sits on the orchestra floor helping the deaf Beethoven to keep time - her presence in his life is an absolute necessity. Award-winning director Agnieszka Holland (The Secret Garden, Europa Europa, Olivier Olivier) brings together Beethoven’s musical genius and his tormented private world to create a thrilling and romantic film.
