A Kind Of Magic

A Kind of Magic is een album van Queen, uitgebracht op 2 juni 1986. De opnames van het album waren in 1985 begonnen. Het is geproduceerd door Queen, Mack en David Richards. Na het succesvolle optreden tijdens het Live Aid-festival in 1985, kreeg Queen nieuwe inspiratie om aan een nieuw album te werken (daarvoor was er sprake van dat de groep uit elkaar zou gaan). Het resulteerde in het lied ’One Vision’, dat als single in 1985 uit kwam. Er werd aan Queen gevraagd of ze bereid waren om muziek te gaan schrijven voor de film Highlander, de band ging ermee akkoord. Op het album staan daardoor twee projecten.

Voor het eerst liet Queen zich filmen in de studio voor de videoclip van One Vision, ook werd er een clip gemaakt van de nummers A Kind Of Magic, Who Wants To Live Forever, Friends Will Be Friends en Princes Of The Universe. De daaropvolgende tour heet de Magic Tour, en wordt de grootste Europese tour ooit. Er werden twee legendarische optredens in het Londense Wembley Stadium gegeven. Ook deden ze drie keer Nederland aan. Op 27 juli 1986 trad Queen als eerste West-Europese band op in een Oostblokland, namelijk in Boedapest, Hongarije. Na 2 maanden toeren, sloot Queen de Magic Tour af in het Knebworth Park, ze speelden voor 120.000 fans. Dit bleek achteraf het laatste concert van Queen te zijn in de originele samenstelling.
Het album A Kind of Magic is in 1991 opnieuw uitgebracht. Ditmaal digitaal geremasterd op een cd en aangevuld met enkele bonustracks.

Queen is a British rock band formed in London in 1970 from the previously disbanded Smile (6) Rock band. Originally called Smile, later in 1970 singer Freddie Mercury came up with the new name for the band. John Deacon joined in March 1971 giving them their fourth and final bass player.

The band has released a total of 18 number-one albums, 18 number-one singles and 10 number-one DVDs, and have sold over 300 million albums worldwide, making them one of the world’s best-selling music artists. They have been honoured with seven Ivor Novello awards and were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2001.

Lead singer Freddie Mercury died in November 1991 of AIDS-related complications. A year after his death, in April 20 1992 held a tribute concert for the lead singer to commemorate his life featuring all three remaining members and along with many great guest singers and guitarists.

Since the death of Freddie Mercury in 1991, Brian May and Roger Taylor continued as various ”Queen+” incarnations. John Deacon has retired from the music business, and opted out of almost all post-Mercury Queen activities, saying ”As far as we are concerned, this is it. There is no point carrying on. It is impossible to replace Freddie”.
