De vierkoppige band Creed bestaat uit schoolvrienden Scott Stapp (zang) en Mark Tremonti (gitaar), Brian Marshall (bas) en Scott Philips (drums) uit Tallahassee, Florida. Hun debuutalbum My Own Prison werd in eigen beheer opgenomen voor zesduizend dollar. Dankzij airplay op lokale radiostations kreeg de plaat aandacht. Ron Saint-Germain (onder andere Soundgarden) verzorgde een nieuwe mix voor de nummers en het album is nu opnieuw uitgebracht op Epic. De post-grunge van Creed is zeker niet uniek of vernieuwend. De gitaren klinken zwaar en de dramatische zang van Mark Tremonti maakt je niet vrolijk. Toch kent de cd met nummers als Torn, Sister, What’s This Life For en de titelsong My Own Prison, die ook als single werd uitgebracht, een aantal positieve hoogtepunten. (CK)
