The tenders at accompanied the 1939 super speed Hiawatha stream liners were modified to include partially ribbed sides in the bold Hiawatha paint scheme. They carry 25 tons of coal and 20,000 gallons of water. Enabled a four– 6–4 steam engine to generate the increase pulling capacity needed to handle trains of 15 and 16 cars a substantial improvement over the 4– 4–2 engines that powered 6-car trains just a few years earlier.
