Title:
White House - 2022 - Richard Nixon
Year:
2022
Description:
President and Mrs. Nixon began candlelight tours of the Mansion during their first Christmas in the White House. Mrs. Nixon offered TV specials of Christmas at the White House for those who could not visit in person. In 1969 for the first time in 25 years green wreaths and red candles were hung in the 16 windows facing Pennsylvania Avenue. ”We love to decorate, you can’t overdo at Christmas” Pat Nixon told the Evening Star.
The First Lady introduced the first Gingerbread House into White House decorations (see the image from 1972 of her with the gingerbread house). The White House chef created a 3 foot 45 pound cottage complete with Hansel and Gretal. The tradition of the White House gingerbread house continues to this day as commemorated by the White House Historical Association in honoring the administration of Richard M. Nixon (1969-1974).
