Title:
Preserve Us
Description:
A colorful drawing of jams and jellies and a basket of biscuits with kudzu vines around the edges.
From the description in the box:
“Preserve Us” A limited-edition puzzle for Puzzle Jam South 2023. Made in collaboration by 3 Cat Max & Chestnut and Hemlock
.
The Title. A play on words meant to throw you off your puzzle game. “Preserve Us” — jams and jellies made from Georgia peaches and kudzu blossoms. “Preserve Us” — save us from the kudzu, the vine that ate the South! And lastly, “Preserve Us” — a riff on wildlife preserve, where one might want to go for a picnic. You may even think of it as “Preserving“ the skill of making hand-cut wooden jigsaw puzzles, by combining an original hand-cut puzzle with modern tools of computer and laser cutter. What other “Preserve“ use can you think of?
The Art. Janelle and Terra created the art from start to finish. First an idea, then a line drawing. Again using modern tech, they input that drawing into an AI painting program, then manually combined 6 colorful outputs to get the desired painting. We came up with a 3 leaf+vine whimsy to repeat throughout the image — kudzu leaves, of course! Then Terra did her magic and turned that digital idea into a physical puzzle. Next, we traced in the cut lines to digitize them, rearranged some cuts, UV printed and laser cut the amalgamation of all these processes into the puzzle you see before you.
